There are many ways to spend weekend away in Suffolk. We've lined up a few of our favourite ideas. It can be mostly foodie, very outdoorsy, or a pick-and-mix selection of our various recommendations. As Suffolk locals, all our inclusions are places we've been to ourselves and genuinely love. Happy weekending!

Suffolk has an improbably good food scene for a county so lightly populated. There is joy in how easily different food stops can be threaded into a single weekend - a long lunch here, a bakery stop there, all tied up with a good sit down dinner on the Saturday evening. You can start your weekend in Orford with a Pump Street Workshop as an activity centrepiece for your foodie weekend. Then wander the coast through Aldeburgh for supper, with delicious detours inland to places like Pettistree or Kelsale. If you time a visit for late September, the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival takes place across a whole weekend.

Cosy season in Suffolk comes into its own from autumn through to early spring, when the landscape turns spare and elemental. Big skies, fattened fields, and wind off the coast. Our recommendation for a cosy kind of weekend would be a spa break at Retreat East. It has rooms to stay in and open grounds that suit crisp walks between bouts of steam and warmth. A pub we'll point you to for a good meal is The Anchor in Walberswick, complete with log fireplace.

The coast, rivers, and marshlands form a beautiful backdrop to a weekend outdoors in Suffolk. Spring to summer will offer the best weather conditions, as will the occasional miraculous sunny winter weekend.

We’d recommend basing yourself around Woodbridge and Orford for a historical weekend in Suffolk. Sutton Hoo is an Anglo-Saxon burial site discovered in the 1930s, and still one of the most significant archaeological finds in the country. Orford Ness isn’t far away and offers a very different kind of history - tied up with all kinds of spooky secrecy and experimentation from WWI through to the Cold War.

A solo weekend in Suffolk can be kept very simple. We’d suggest walks along the beach between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Join us for a group chocolate or baking workshop at Pump Street. And yoga in Melton works well as a bookend on Sunday morning before heading home. You can also get the train down from London, which makes Suffolk an easy option for a solo trip without needing a car.

Orford - Our Favourite Stays in Orford

If you're in the mood for going slightly off-pattern, llama walking at Hilly Ridge Alpacas would be our recommendation. Or you could give over a full day to birdwatching with an expert guide. For this kind of weekend, you might stay somewhere cute and characterful like The Tea Caddy, or pitch a tent and camp in summer at Brick Kiln Farm Camping.
