How to Get to Pump Street from London (in under 2 hours)

Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of London for a taste of the famous treats at Pump Street Bakery? Or join us on one of our new Workshop classes? Here’s a quick guide on how to get there from Liverpool Street Station, turning your journey into a delightful day out.

Step 1: Catch a Train to Ipswich
Start your journey at London’s Liverpool Street Station, where you’ll hop on a train to Ipswich. Trains run frequently throughout the day and typically take about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Opt for a fast service if possible to save time - these are the trains that terminate at Norwich. Make sure to grab a seat by the window—the scenery transforms from cityscape to countryside, giving you a perfect preview of the peace that awaits.

Step 2: Ipswich to Wickham Market by Train
Once in Ipswich, switch to a Greater Anglia train headed for Lowestoft. These are usually over the bridge and at the short platform 1. You’ll need to get off at Woodbridge, which is the closest station to Orford with a taxi rank. This leg of the journey is about 30 minutes and will take you further into the idyllic Suffolk countryside.

Step 3: Hop in a Taxi to Orford
From Woodbridge, you have a few options. The simplest is a taxi, which takes around 25 minutes and costs about £20-£25. Taxis can be pre-booked or arranged at the station - we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment, for both your outward and inward journeys.

There is a bus service between Orford and Woodbridge but it is very infrequent, leaving just once a day in each direction.

Step 4: Arrive at Pump Street, Orford
When you arrive in Orford, you’ll find yourself in a delightful, historic fishing village that’s perfect for a day of exploration, some fresh air and some deliciousness of course. Head to Pump Street Bakery at 1 Pump Street, where you can enjoy a coffee and a pastry, or if you are Workshop-bound, head straight there to get learning!

    Insider Tips:

    • Plan Your Return: Orford is charming enough that you might lose track of time, so plan your return journey in advance to avoid missing your train! This includes booking your taxis in advance.
    • Enjoy Orford: While you’re there, explore the nearby Orford Castle and the Suffolk Coast. Pump Street is just one of many attractions in this beautiful village.
